Maternity coverage is one of ten essential health benefits that must be provided by all health insurance providers. As such, it’s important to know just exactly what that maternity coverage does and does not cover. Here are some guidelines so there’s no surprises down the road.

Outpatient Services
Outpatient services are medical procedures that can be performed in a medical center without an overnight stay. These include prenatal and postnatal doctor visits, gestational diabetes screenings, lab studies, medications, and anything else that should only take a few hours, at most.

Inpatient Services

Inpatient services are any services which require at least one overnight stay in a hospital or medical facility. In the case of inpatient maternity services, this includes hospitalization and physician fees associated with the birth of a child.

Newborn Baby Care

All of the procedures which are done immediately after the baby is born - and before you leave the hospital - are covered under insurance. This means you can rest at ease after the labor childbirth, knowing that you’re still going to be financially sound when it’s all said and done.

Lactation Counseling/Breast Pump Rental

Lactation consultants are specialists who are trained to teach mothers how to feed their baby. If women experience breastfeeding problems, like latching difficulties or painful nursing, this is how they can receive some assistance. In addition, if necessary, breast pump rentals are covered through insurance.

Modern insurance covers more than you may think - and now you know just exactly to what extent it stretches. From the early stages of your pregnancy through childbirth, you’re generally covered.
