Do you know what conditions run in your family? If not, pregnancy is a good reason to find out, Your family’s medical history can not only provide insight into what illnesses you may are predisposed to, but also to alert your doctor of any complications you may experience during your pregnancy.

Both you and your partner need to know the medical history of your families. Your baby will inherit genes from both of your families and it’s best to know if these genes include any medical conditions. Some of these conditions can affect your baby at birth so it’s best to collect your family’s medical history as soon as possible.

While not inevitable, conditions that run in both you and your partner's family present a bigger risk. This is especially the case with illnesses such as sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis, which has a very high rate of being passed on when both parents carry the gene, even if neither actually have the illness.

It’s also a good idea to ask about your mother’s pregnancy. Though it’s not completely predictive, any complications she experienced pose a larger threat to you during your pregnancy. The pregnancy of your partner’s mother is less important because the complications are usually passed on maternally.

Your family’s medical history isn’t just nice to know, it’s crucial. You can start gathering information with this form or find one on the internet. Your doctor will ask similar questions about your family’s medical history so preparing it ahead of time will help both you and your doctor.
