You will most likely schedule your baby’s first doctors appointment upon being discharged after delivery. When the appointment approaches, knowing how to prepare can be tricky. Use the information below as a checklist and you’ll look like a pro!

What to Have:

  • Insurance card
  • Hospital paperwork
  • Your medical record
  • Questions
  • Pen and pad (for notes)
  • Diaper bag
  • Blanket (to put over the cold examination table)

What to Know:

  • How often your baby eats
  • Formula or breastmilk
  • If formula
  • How much
  • If breastfed
  • How long does your baby eat
  • If you have any lactation issues
  • How often diapers are changed
  • What the stool consistency and color is

Remember
Dress your baby in simple clothes to make it easier for the nurse and doctor.

Plan to arrive early enough to fill out paperwork and have diapers and a change of clothes in your diaper bag just in case. Most of all, treat your baby’s first appointment as a learning opportunity. As mentioned in the “What to Have” section, make sure to arrive armed with any questions you may have.
