One of the most common, unspoken, side effects of pregnancy is the barrage of unsolicited pregnancy advice that will come your way. Unless you lock yourself away for of the entirety of your pregnancy, there’s no way to avoid this. The only thing you can control is how you react to it. If you’re having a tough time dealing with all the unwanted advice, try some of these five methods:

Smile, Nod, and Say Thank You

This is the standard non-confrontational response. Being polite and then going about your way is the smartest decision if you’re opposed to getting into an argument or discussion.

Refer to Your Doctor

One of the easiest ways to shut down unsolicited advice is to either tell them they’ll ask your doctor about their advice or that you’ve already spoken to them about the subject.

Ask Questions

Ask them where they got their information and if they’ve tried it themselves. Typically, people only repeat what they have read or give advice based on what worked for one child.

Stay Informed

This is the best way to separate useful advice from silly wives’ tales. Read up on everything of importance, and speak with your doctor so that you are armed with information.

Listen and Considerate It

Not all unsolicited advice is bad advice. Consider whether the advice you are given may actually be valuable. If you find that it is, make sure to thank the person who gave it.

While it may be very annoying, it’s important to remember that most people are genuinely trying to help. If they aren’t being rude, try not to come back with an icy response, no matter how bad you’d like to.
