One of the harder parts of pregnancy is figuring out what medications you can and can’t take. Sometimes you only have a small headache and can forgo any medicine if you have too. In other instances, your condition is more serious and you need some type of medication. This is when it comes in handy to know which ones you cannot take, so that you can speak to your doctor about an alternative. These are the major medicines to avoid:

  • Antidepressants (specifically MAOI’s)
  • Tranquilizers
  • Aspirin (Bayer, Excedrin)
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
  • Acne Medications
  • Lithium
  • Naproxen (Aleve)
  • Antifungals
  • Antihistamines
  • Antibiotics

As a bonus, avoid these as well:
  • Herbs
  • Nicotine
  • Caffeine

For all except the bonus drugs, there are usually safe alternatives you can take. For medications not listed here, it is still a good idea to speak to your doctor before taking it.
