Creating a birthing plan can seem overwhelming. There are so many details and it can be hard to know what to include. If you are a first time mother, you don’t even have any experience to go off of. Thankfully, there are a ton of resources to help you through the process. Whether you use a computer generated plan or make your own from scratch, make sure to include this very important information.

Labor

  • How long do you want to wait before going to hospital/birthing center?
  • Who do you want in attendance?
  • What types of pain management do you want?

Delivery

  • Where do you want to deliver?
  • What position would you prefer to deliver in?
  • What kind of involvement will your partner have?
  • Do you want an episiotomy (incision between vagina and anus)?

Postpartum

  • Do you want a private or shared room?
  • Who will be staying with you?
  • Do you want your baby to stay in your room or be brought to you at certain times?
  • Do you want to breastfeed, bottle feed, or do a combination of the two?
  • If your baby is a boy, do you want him circumcised?
  • How soon do you want to check out of the hospital?

You can also include what type of atmosphere you want to give birth in and what type of amenities you want available. Just be sure to remember that, just like everything else in life, things may not go as planned. Try to stay flexible for the most pleasant birthing experience.
