Becoming pregnant after the age of 35 has its pro’s and con’s. On one hand, women are typically much more emotionally and physically stable then they were 10 years ago. They are financially in a better place, more likely to still be with their partner, and generally wiser. On the other hand, there are increased health risks for mother and child. Here are the risks and how to avoid them.

Increased Risk Of:

  • Fertility problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Miscarriage
  • Placenta Previa
  • Cesarean Section
  • Premature birth
  • Stillbirth
  • Baby with genetic disorder or birth defect
  • Multiples
  • Gestational Diabetes

How to Minimize Risk

  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Gain a healthy amount of weight
  • Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and drugs
  • Consult with doctor about medications and herbal supplements
  • Get regular prenatal check-ups
  • Consider getting prenatal tests for women over 35 done
  • Most test for genetic disorders and birth defects like Down syndrome and spina bifida

Genetic Tests

  • Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
    • Available at 9 to 11 weeks
    • Miscarriage risk
  • Amniocentesis
    • Available at 15 to 16 weeks
  • Alpha-feto-protein (AFP)
    • Available at 15-20 weeks
  • Cordorentesis
    • Available at 18 weeks onward

If you are pregnant and 35, there are risks, but joy of your new baby and the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you are ready can easily overshadow them. Just make sure to take all of the precautions you can, and it’s possible to have a happy, healthy pregnancy, even after 35 years old.
