After the excitement of finding out that you have a baby on the way, the reality of working while pregnant will set in. You may not realize how much of a challenge this can be until it happens to you. Here’s some tips and tricks for managing your pregnancy at work:

Things to Avoid

  • Heavy lifting
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Irregular or excessive hours

Stay Comfortable

  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
  • Make sure to eat
  • Take breaks
  • Take an occasional sick day if needed

Managing Morning Sickness

  • Have mouthwash, towels, and plastic bags on hand
  • If severe, speak with your supervisor about a more flexible schedule
  • Snack on crackers

Dealing with Fatigue

  • Get enough protein and iron
  • Cut back on activities outside of work
  • Exercise
  • Get enough sleep

Breaking the News

  • Tell your boss first
  • Wait until at least end of first trimester
  • Consider waiting as long as possible
  • When you do tell them, notify them of when you will need to miss work for prenatal care

If you have a healthy, fairly low risk pregnancy, you may be able to work all the way up to the day you deliver. For information about maternity leave, check out our post, How Much Maternity Leave Should I Take.
