Healthy eating while pregnant is hard. It’s tempting to give in to cravings—and who craves carrots? Unfortunately the reality is, healthy eating is essential for you and your baby during pregnancy in order to ensure your bundle of joy is healthy when they’re born. 

Not as Much as You Think

During the first trimester, you don’t need to increase your daily calories. For the second trimester, you only need to add an additional 300 to 340 calories. For example, 300 calories is about 3 medium sized apples. In the third and final trimester, you should be eating no more than 450 calories from what you should be consuming if you weren’t pregnant.. 450 calories is about a cup of almonds. This means that eating for two is really only a couple of small extra snacks or an extra meal, which you can get for only a couple of dollars.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive

Grocery stores always have sales, which are included in weekly sale papers. 99 cent stores also have inexpensive produce as well as canned, frozen, and dry goods. If affording food is a major issue, you may qualify for a program called WIC, which can help you with food from the time you are pregnant until your child is five years old. Don’t Go Overboard

Eating healthy is not the same thing as dieting. Dieting, unless advised by your doctor is highly discouraged during pregnancy. It could deprive you and your baby of important vitamins and minerals as well as cause complications. Gaining 15 to 40 pounds during pregnancy (depending on whether you were underweight, overweight, or normal before pregnancy), is both normal and healthy. 

Healthy eating doesn’t have to take lots of time and money. As long as you are getting enough to eat without overdoing it, you are on the right track.
